Between 6–15 July, representatives from almost every country in the world gather for the High Level Political Forum (HLPF) organised by the United Nations. Their task is to track and follow up on the implementation of the Agenda 2030. In 2021, RFSL’s International Advocacy Advisor will be part of the Swedish delegation to HLPF, as an expert on LGBTQI issues.
The HLPF is a conference organised annually under the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). It brings together representatives from UN Member States, civil society organisations, UN entities, and other stakeholders. The HLPF is tasked with tracking the international implementation and progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Each year, a different theme is chosen. This year’s theme is: “Sustainable and resilient recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic that promotes the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development: building an inclusive and effective path for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda in the context of the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development”.
How activists can get involved
Ahead of this year’s meeting, RFSL, Outright Action International and COC Netherlands have put together a primer that introduces activists and organisations to the High Level Political Forum. The Primer also gives hands on advice on how you make the most of the forum.
The LGBTI Stakeholder Group is composed of global, regional, and national civil society organisations and activists focusing on the inclusion of LGBTI people in the work towards realising the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development. The group is highly engaged in the HLPF and is recognised as an entity within the Major Groups and Other Stakeholders (MGoS) structure. In connection with the 2021 HLPF, the LGBTI Stakeholder Group is hosting a side event on the topic of advances and barriers on achieving health and wellbeing of LGBTI population.
